You Don't Have a Content Problem, You Have a Visibility Problem

You don't have a content problem, you have a visibility problem

Short answer: if you're posting consistently and still not growing or selling, you probably don't have a content problem, you have a visibility problem. Content mainly nurtures people who already follow you, and you can't control who the algorithm shows it to. Fix it by running a simple visibility routine alongside your content: 30 minutes a day of engaging with ideal clients and showing up in communities, one guest spot a week, and one collaboration or event a month, each with a clear next step that turns new people into leads.

Whenever I ask a business owner, "What are you doing to get visible?", nine times out of ten the answer is "posting content". And I get it. Content is the thing everyone tells you to do. Show up every day, be consistent, the algorithm will reward you.

But here's what I say in every session I run: posting content is not enough anymore. If posting is your entire visibility strategy, you're relying on luck. Below you'll find a quick test to check if visibility is your real problem, then a step by step routine to fix it, with scripts you can copy today.

This is part of my ultimate guide to turning content into clients, where content is the nurture piece and visibility is what brings new people in.

Why isn't content a visibility strategy?

Because when you post on Facebook, Instagram or any other platform, you have no control over who that content reaches or how many people see it. Some formats help (short reels reach more non-followers than talking head videos do), but a lot of what you post only reaches people who already know you.

There are two types of visibility:

  • Visibility in front of a new audience: people who have never heard of you.
  • Visibility in front of your current audience: people who already follow you, are on your list or are in your community.

Your content mostly does the second job. So reframe it. See your content as the nurture piece, the thing that builds trust with your current audience. Then ask yourself every single day: what am I doing today to make more people aware of my brand?

Content vs visibility: two types of visibility, new audience and current audience

Do I have a content problem or a visibility problem?

Your audience goes what I call stale when you only post. Those who have bought have bought. Those who won't, won't. Tick any that sound familiar:

  • The same 20 people like every post.
  • Your follower count has barely moved in months.
  • Launches get the same handful of sign-ups each time.
  • Your offer used to sell and now it doesn't, even though nothing about it has changed.
  • You keep rewriting your content pillars and messaging and nothing improves.

Two or more ticks? Stop tweaking the content. Fix the visibility. If very few new people are seeing your offer, no amount of better captions will fix it.

Why does visibility matter so much right now?

Visibility means more people know who you are. The more people who know who you are, the bigger your reputation gets. The bigger your reputation, the more credibility you have. More credibility means more trust. And trust equals sales.

That chain matters more than ever. There's more competition, buyers have more choice, a lot of people have been burned by programmes that didn't deliver, and AI means anyone can produce a mountain of content overnight. When I ask clients why they bought from me, the answer I hear again and again is "because I see you everywhere". When I started my business in January 2020, nobody had any idea who Laurie Burrows was. I made it my job to get in front of as many of my ideal clients as possible, as fast as possible. That's what built my reputation, and it's why sales got easier.

The visibility benchmarks

Activity Target
Engaging with ideal clients 20 to 30 minutes a day
Ideal client list to engage with 50 people, refreshed monthly
Value posts in communities 3 to 5 a week
Guest spots or podcasts 1 a week, or 2 a month to start
Collaboration, summit or event 1 a month
Bigger visibility push (affiliate launch, summit, giveaway) 1 a quarter
Every visibility activity Has a next step: a free resource, a keyword DM or an event

How to fix a visibility problem, step by step

Step 1: Build your list of 50 ideal clients

Search your platform for your ideal client's job title or niche (for example "mindset coach" or "VA for coaches") and save 50 accounts into a list or a note. My team and I do this once a month.

Time: 45 minutes, once a month. Done when: you have 50 saved profiles of people who could buy from you.

Step 2: Engage for 30 minutes a day

Engage with a few posts per person: one from a month ago, one from a couple of weeks ago and their latest. You pop up in their notifications enough times and they get curious. Split it 10 minutes morning, midday and evening if you need to. If 30 minutes a day leads to a four figure client, it's worth it.

Copy and paste: meaningful comments (not "great post!")

This bit about [specific point] is so true. I see it all the time with [your ideal client], especially when [situation].

Saving this. The [specific tip] is the part most people skip. Have you found [related question]?

Love that you shared this. [One sentence of your own experience on the same topic].

Time: 30 minutes a day. Done when: you have left at least 15 thoughtful comments on ideal client posts.

Where does the 30 minutes come from? Usually from the time you'd otherwise spend writing posts. The Content Creator inside Ascendia OS plans your month, writes your posts in your voice and schedules them for you, so your own time goes on getting in front of new people.

Step 3: Show up in 3 communities

Pick three Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups or memberships where your ideal clients hang out. Answer questions, share value, share a story, celebrate a win. Some groups have promo days where you can share your free offer, so put those in your diary.

Copy and paste: community value post

[Hook: one line about a problem this group talks about a lot.]

I've seen this so many times, so here's what I'd do: 1. [Action]. 2. [Action]. 3. [Action].

Hope that helps someone today. If you want my free [guide] that goes deeper, drop a comment and I'll send it over (if the group rules allow).

Time: 20 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week. Done when: you have posted or answered questions in each of your 3 communities this week.

Step 4: Book one guest spot a week

Guest speaking in other people's memberships, programmes, communities and podcasts is the fastest way to borrow trust. I usually do it free in return for sharing one free resource. Ask people you know, post in your own audience that you're open to speaking, and search Facebook groups for "speaker" or "podcast guest". The full process is in guest speaking: how to use other people's audiences.

Copy and paste: guest spot pitch

Hi [name], I love what you're doing with [their community or podcast]. I help [ideal client] with [result], and I think a short training on [specific topic] could be really useful for your members.

I'd do it as a 20 to 30 minute session with an action step they can use straight away. Happy to fit around you. Would that be helpful?

Time: 30 minutes a week for outreach. Done when: you have one guest spot booked in the next 4 weeks.

Step 5: Add one collaboration or event a month

  • Summits and giveaways: join them or host your own. Everyone promotes, so everyone gets in front of each other's audiences. See summits and collaborations for visibility.
  • Collaborations and exchanges: run a masterclass with someone who serves the same ideal client but does something different, or promote each other's free offers.
  • Events: attend to connect, and sponsor when you have the budget. I once asked my audience which events they were going to that year, then got tickets and reached out to the hosts about speaking and sponsorship.
  • Let your audience share you: share-to-win giveaways and affiliate schemes where people earn commission on sales they bring in.

Time: 2 to 3 hours a month. Done when: next month has one collaboration, summit or event in the diary.

Step 6: Give every visibility activity a next step

Visibility leads to leads. Leads lead to conversations. Conversations lead to sales. So for every activity, decide what happens next: a free resource with an opt-in page, a "DM me the word X" offer, or an invitation to a free live event. Then message everyone who takes that step. Joining visibility to sales like this is the heart of my course Content To Clients®.

Time: 15 minutes per activity. Done when: every guest spot, community post and collaboration in your plan has a named next step. If you don't have a free resource page to send people to yet, the Funnel Builder in Ascendia OS builds your opt-in page and thank you page for you.

A visibility plan: daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly actions to get in front of new audiences

Worked example: a 30 minute a day visibility week

Example: a mindset coach with 900 followers and the same 20 people liking everything.

Day 30 minute visibility block
Monday Build the list of 50 ideal clients. Engage with 10 of them.
Tuesday Engage with 15 of the list. Answer 3 questions in one community.
Wednesday Send 3 guest spot pitches. Engage with 10 of the list.
Thursday Post a value post in a community with a free guide offer. Reply to every comment.
Friday Engage with 15 of the list. DM everyone who asked for the guide.

If those few actions bring in 10 new leads a week, that's around 40 a month that weren't coming before. At a 3% average, that's roughly one extra sale a month from 30 minutes a day, before the guest spot has even happened. And it compounds, because each new follower gets nurtured by the content you were already posting.

Common mistakes (and the fix)

  • Doing visibility in bursts. You post once in a group asking for opportunities, never follow up, and three months later sales have dried up. Fix: it lives in your diary as a daily block.
  • Counting your own posts as visibility. Fix: your 30 minutes must reach people who don't follow you yet.
  • Visibility with no next step. Fix: every activity points to a free resource, a keyword DM or an event.
  • Delegating all engagement. Fix: do the conversations yourself. I personally engage with ideal clients every day, not my team.
  • Trying everything at once. Fix: pick three activities you can keep doing for 90 days.

I'll be honest: there was a period when I had to step back from my business and didn't focus on visibility enough. I felt it. So I'm doing exactly what I'm asking you to do. For the full daily, weekly and monthly plan, read visibility without ads.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have a visibility problem?

If the same small group of people engage with everything, your audience isn't growing and your launches get the same numbers each time, it's visibility. Good content can't sell to people who never see it.

Is posting content still worth it?

Yes. Content is how you nurture people and build trust. It just can't be the only thing you do to get seen.

How much time should I spend on visibility?

Start with 30 minutes a day. Use it for engaging, posting in communities and finding opportunities. Even an evening in front of the TV can be time to engage.

What's the fastest way to get visible with a small audience?

Get in front of other people's audiences: guest speaking, collaborations, summits and giveaways. You don't need a big audience to benefit, because you're borrowing theirs.

Do I need ads to get visible?

No. I got to my first six figures without running a single ad. Ads are a great amplifier once you know what works organically, and awareness ads can start from $5 a day.
